Altadena

Directly north of Pasadena lies the small, up-and-coming neighborhood of Altadena.

Welcome to Altadena

The hidden gem of Southern California

Directly north of Pasadena lies the small, up-and-coming neighborhood of Altadena. With a population of 46,000, Altadena is the perfect option for those looking to live in a smaller community while staying close to city life. Featuring Tudor-style homes in a quiet, unincorporated community, Altadena is truly the hidden gem of Southern California. Historic mansions wind through the village towards the expansive San Gabriel mountains, providing a breathtaking backdrop to any home.

Homes are selling quickly in this neighborhood, and for a good reason. The historic, single-family homes in Altadena were designed by Elisha Janes in the 1920s, and residents affectionately refer to them as “happy houses.” They feature cherry facades, bright colors, and perfectly decorated front yards. The small homes and mansions along Millionaire’s Row don’t stay on the market for too long in Altadena. With a short commute to the heart of Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, it’s a small-town lover’s paradise.

What to Love

  • The expansive mountain landscape views

Local Lifetyle

Imagine living outside of the hustle and bustle of city life, where neighbors know your name, the local schools are excellent, and the relaxing views of the mountains and national parks are just outside your back door. That’s what living in Altadena is like! It’s the perfect location for those looking to escape the traffic and the noise of the city while remaining close to the convenience of city amenities. Altadena is a thriving location for young families, entrepreneurs, professionals, and retirees. While the neighborhood may be small, there are plenty of dining and shopping opportunities, annual festivals, and community events that make Altadena a top destination for Southern California residents.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

When you live in Altadena, you’ll have a variety of flavors at your fingertips. When Paul and Edie Fox opened Fox’s Restaurant in 1955, they hoped to create a warm, welcoming spot for classic American fares that leave guests full and happy — and that’s exactly what they’ve done! The restaurant has changed hands since, but through the years, each owner has proudly upheld the mission of Fox’s while adding unique twists to classic favorites. Menu items include a house cheeseburger, shrimp and grits, breakfast for dinner, and rosemary roasted chicken. Gather with friends and community members for delicious meals and great company.

Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, Altadena Town and Country Club features several acres of tennis courts, large ballroom spaces, outdoor sites, and event catering. The club is members-only and offers an elegant gathering space for Altadena residents and beyond, and it provides members with gourmet dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Choose from beautiful indoor or outdoor dining rooms, or take your summertime meals poolside at the cafe.

Unique, whimsical, and fun is what shopping is all about in Altadena. Visit Hoopla! An Emporium of Good Things and the Wishing Well School Store for a truly unique shopping experience. Find hidden treasures along the shelves, like specialized teas, stationery items, and local jams and jellies. Pick up locally made toys, games, and instruments at the Wishing Well, located in the Pasadena Waldorf School, and attend one of their enchanting trunk shows.

Things to Do

Mount Lowe Railway was initially created to give tourists an attractive ride to Mount Lowe and Echo Mountain. The railway stopped its services in 1938 and has since become one of the area’s most popular hiking spots. The trail is for more experienced hikers and spans 10 miles up the mountain, following the ruins of the old railway. Hike to the end, and you’ll come across the Echo Mountain Hiking Trails, named after the abandoned Echo Mountain Resort. USA Today named this 5.5-mile trail as one of the “Ten Great North American Hikes,” offering some of the most beautiful landscape views in Southern California.

Located at the top of North Lake Avenue with stunning views of the Los Angeles skyline, Charles S. Farnsworth Park is an Altadena favorite and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The community building sits high in the foothills, offering expansive views of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean, and it serves as a historical event space for community events and private parties. There is also an amphitheater on the property for outdoor concerts.
